The aim of this project was to educate women in basic literacy and to train them in leather handbag sewing skill so that they can become self-dependent, be able to support themselves and their families, and become active members of the society.
Illiterate and vulnerable women between the ages of 18 and 40 from the province of Badakhshan, including girls, the disabled, widows and orphans.
An education in literacy skills of reading, writing and doing simple math enables women to become self-dependent, confident and be able to think differently. Literate women are more aware of their basic rights, and more likely to send their children especially girls to attend school. Combining this with the income generating skill of leather handbag sewing and basic business administration skills will enable the women to have a sustainable source of income and hence be able to support themselves and their families. This will also reduce child labor leading to more children attending schools.
