AWEP launches project for afghan refugee women and children in Tajikistan

In 2024, AWEP launched a new initiative in Tajikistan focused on the situation of Afghan refugee women and children. The project aims to address key challenges related to social inclusion, economic opportunity, health access, gender equality, and women’s rights.
In close partnership with the public organization “Gender and Development,” we are conducting field research and community engagement to understand the specific experiences of Afghan refugees—particularly women and children—living in Tajikistan. Many face limited access to healthcare, education, employment, and support networks.
Beyond research, a central goal of this initiative is to foster stronger relationships between Afghan refugees and the local Tajik population. By promoting dialogue, cultural exchange, and mutual understanding, AWEP hopes to contribute to a more inclusive and cohesive society where refugee women and their families feel valued and supported.
This project reflects our long-term commitment to empowering vulnerable communities and advocating for policies that uphold dignity, equality, and peaceful coexistence.

Health and Humanitarian Services
AWEP provides free health checkups, medication, and awareness workshops for women and children who lack access to medical care. Our health clinics offer services to underserved women and children, including maternal care, vaccination awareness, and family planning. AWEP also organizes HIV/AIDS prevention and drug abuse awareness campaigns. In response to natural disasters and humanitarian crises, we distribute essential aid to the most affected communities, ensuring not only physical relief but also emotional and psychological support during times of extreme hardship.

Advocacy and Rights Awareness
Advocating for human, women's, and children's rights has always been central to AWEP’s mission. AWEP runs workshops and community sessions on human rights, gender equality, freedom of speech, and democracy. We actively campaign for girls’ right to education and women’s right to legal protection and media representation. Legal support is extended to women navigating judicial systems, and we work to ensure their voices are heard both locally and globally. AWEP collaborates with national and international bodies to lobby for policy changes and raise awareness on pressing gender-based issues.
AWEP in Sweden
Since establishing its Swedish branch in 2008, AWEP has become an important voice for Afghan women in the diaspora. The organization:
-
Hosts exhibitions, cultural shows, and seminars to raise awareness of Afghan women’s struggles and resilience.
-
Supports integration and language programs for migrants in Sweden and other European countries.
-
Advocates within European institutions for inclusive policies that support displaced Afghan families.
-
Secures international funding and partnerships to support AWEP’s field operations inside Afghanistan.
-
Coordinates a network of volunteers and experts across Europe, building bridges of solidarity and mutual support.
AWEP’s international work has amplified its impact and helped maintain global focus on Afghan women’s issues, especially during times when the country fades from media headlines.

AWEP remains as committed today as it was at its founding. As Afghanistan continues to face political instability and humanitarian crisis, AWEP’s work is more urgent than ever. With each school opened, each woman trained, and each child given hope, we are building not just resilience—but the foundation of a new, just Afghanistan.
We believe in the power of education, the strength of community, and the resilience of women. Through compassion, professionalism, and tireless advocacy, AWEP continues to light a path forward for those who have been left in the shadows for far too long.
